James Burt

As a barrister, James has been engaged by a broad range of solicitors to work with their clients.

Previously, he practised for 14 years at Chapman Tripp - seven years as a senior associate.

Over his 24-year career, James has dealt with both large and small cases and has appeared on behalf of clients at all levels of the court system. Specialising in dispute resolution, he has also represented clients in arbitrations, mediations, negotiations and regulatory investigations. 

James is a founding trustee of Te Kiwi Māia, a charitable trust with the objective to provide support and assistance to first responders and Defence Force personnel who are injured (mentally or physically) in the line of duty.

A member of the Royal New Zealand Naval Reserve for 27 years, he currently holds the rank of Captain.  In May 2024, James was appointed as the Assistant Chief of Navy (Reserves).

James has a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of Auckland. Great with numbers and spreadsheets, he also has a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance.

He is a member of the New Zealand Bar Association, the New Zealand Insurance Law Association and RITANZ.
